Pulled another m42 from 95 318ti.
It was from automatic car so thrust bearing looks good.
I will refresh it with new gaskets arp head studs and new 360 thrust bearing. It should hold 20psi and 300-350ftlb. In a meantime i will check my other m42 block to see of i can build it. I used that block to center the transmission when i was welding the bellhousing. I might have messed up the main bearing caps. I need to get bore dial gauges and verify.

I didn't realize you had to rotate and weld the flange on the trans (but makes sense with the vertical orientation). Fingers crossed the new engine lasts a lot longer than the first one.
